To Grip and Grasp The opposable thumb, which evolved at least as far back as Homo habilis around 2.3 million years ago, is actually a big deal; with it, we can hold an object with one hand while the other works upon that object. Once we get something in our grip, cultural evolution takes over – with the hands not just developing skills, but serving as a conduit for values. The talk will be a tour through different projects and evolve around my ideas as a maker and artist.
Gitte Nygaard – Artist & Maker works across disciplines to expand conversations and inspire awareness of the relationship between ourselves and the objects we live with. Her work moves beyond the gallery, connects the seemingly unexpected and explores the often overlooked. While Gitte’s range of work is broad and multi-faceted, connecting the strands is the idea of how jewellery and products create relations to people and between people. She creates artworks, functional objects, collections, commissioned pieces and project based collaborations.

The Open Day of the Rietveld Academie 2021, a special year with a special online open day. On 29 January everyone will be able to join. Since distance is not relevant anymore, we welcome you from every possible spot where you have access to WiFi or 4G. Your own bed, your garden, lying on the floor, your favorite spot in the park, the back seat of the car, even the toilet if you like. Welcome at Galerie Door!
Galerie Door shows contemporary jewellery and fine art of (inter)national artists and designers that excite. Some because of their directness, others through the original stories and yet others for the poetry and humor in their work. What they all share, however, is their fine craftsmanship.
Trained as an art historian, I continuously look for experimental and conceptual art pieces. All art works tell stories. In Galerie Door these stories can roughly be divided into three themes. The first theme is art that’s inspired by the beauty of nature, also referred to as ‘The Sublime’. The second theme deals with value. The value of material such as precious stones and gold versus the use of plastics considered as an everlasting – yet often considered – worthless material. The third theme may be described as the painterly theme ‘naïve’ or art that reflects a tribal, folkore type of expression, a universal language.
Galerie Door organizes exhibitions (spring, summer, autumn and winter) and events for artists to gain a broader audience, more publicity and the chance of finding a new ‘home’. They offer you – the audience – a window to a different world, a new door that opens. We would love to welcome you!

Doreen Timmers (1972 Veghel, the Netherlands): I studied art history at the Radboud University in Nijmegen where I graduated. I am trained in analyzing images. During my studies I cultivated my fascination for both medieval and contemporary culture, art and architecture. Especially the aspect of ‘storytelling’ that pervades good art has always had my deepest interest.
I was lucky enough to work at the largest gallery for contemporary art jewellery for over 7 years. But I also worked for 6 years as a museum counselor, and did public relations and marketing for public art and cultural events. This knowledge and these skills I am combining in a gallery where the public can see art jewellery and fine arts together.
